PPT — Feelings, Now With Slides

Even the breakdown has an agenda and next steps.

PPT · Emotion Deck v8_FINAL

The pattern

You can turn a breakdown into a clean deck before admitting there was a breakdown.

Intellectualizing organizes intense experience and protects function. It becomes costly when analysis stands in for actually feeling what happened.

Where it helps

You make complex experiences understandable and can create meaning without losing function.

Where it gets in the way

Explanation replaces experience; your body stores the feelings your deck successfully summarized.

You can explain exactly why you hurt but cannot locate the hurt in your body.

Decisions and feelings

You build coherent models and prefer choices that can be explained. Beware of rejecting a true preference because it lacks a respectable slide.

You translate emotion into structure. This keeps you functional; it can also keep you one elegant layer away from yourself.

People and boundaries

You need someone who does not demand a neat theory before offering presence.

People think you are emotionally steady. Often the emotion was simply invited to a meeting and denied speaking time.

Words you could use

I cannot explain it yet, but I am not okay. Please stay with me before we solve it.

Situations to notice

The repeating loop

  1. Feeling appears
  2. Convert it into analysis
  3. Recover presentability
  4. Body stores the unread mail

Try a small change

Say one sentence with no analysis, solution, or lesson attached.

  1. Name sensation before cause
  2. Allow one conclusion-free sentence
  3. Delay advice for ten minutes

A question to take away

Think of one recent situation that fits this description and one that does not. What changed: your energy, the people involved, the stakes, or the amount of time you had?
